Therapy, like life, is a journey. With each step, we learn something new. This is clear to me both as a husband and father and as a practicing psychotherapist. I’ve been working with couples for 36 years and find them to be the most challenging, and fulfilling, of all my clients because I can see the change as both people learn new techniques to reconnect with the person they love.

About Lewis J Moskowitz

In 1981, I received my Master of Arts in Applied Clinical Psychology from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Life brought me to the great state of Florida and in 1991, I received my license to practice as a mental health counselor in the state. I’m also a believer in alternative methods in certain situations, so in 1994, I became certified by the state of Florida as a clinical hypnotherapist. Lifelong learning is important, and in 2013, I received my doctorate in Behavioral Science and Clinical Hypnotherapy. I also make a point of attending workshops and seminars for my ongoing professional development.

I believe in being upfront. Often, when I first meet with a couple they’re sitting at opposite ends of the couch in my office. That body language speaks volumes about how they are feeling – and the state of their relationship. It’s heartwarming to watch couples close that gap as they bridge the distance in their relationship.

Sometimes couples come to me who have been to other therapists who excel at listening, but don’t necessarily actively contribute to the conversation. That method has its place, but it’s not how I work. Throughout couples’ therapy, I’m reviewing their goals with them. At the same time, I know it’s important to be respectful of each person’s vulnerabilities. So we may have discussions about how safe they are feeling and their readiness to talk about something. My role can also be to bring a conversation back on track. When arguing, it can be easy to focus on the other person or wanting to know why something happened. My job is to help couples move past that place and focus on the solution rather than being stuck on things that can’t be changed.

Working with me means a solution oriented approach. With couples, I work a lot on communication. There is a listening exercise I truly enjoy which teaches the listener how to listen and the speaker how to communicate not just with words but also with their body language. Both individuals learn to be meaningful and caring participants in the interaction.

During sessions, I expect clients to be respectful and willing to do the work. In between sessions, I give homework to reinforce the skills being learned. My intention is for my clients to make their relationship a priority, to invest the time it takes to move out of the current place and find the solution.

Ultimately, I’m invested in the couples I work with. I care about their success and need them to care even more than I do in order to achieve the desired results of reconnection and a happy relationship.

Couples Counseling in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

While every relationship is different, my process for working with couples always starts by meeting with both people together to get a sense of the concerns. During the first meeting, we work together to create a plan that will work best to address the specific concerns of that couple. In some cases, I may meet with each person individually as well. The first session is also an opportunity for you, as a couple, to learn about me and get insight into how I can help you and how we’ll work together. Whether or not I meet with anyone individually, the entire couples counseling process is collaborative. It’s about getting to know you both as individuals and as a couple – what’s important to you and what you want to change. I’ve found that couples usually need guidance learning to work together, rather than against each other; they need to be reminded how to truly listen to each other rather than talk at each other. It’s about remembering how to be teammates while respecting and appreciating each other’s differences. Compassion, communication, and change are critical to the couples’ therapy process.

My “success formula” guides couples through the process of awareness to acknowledgment

As an interpersonal, interactive, solution oriented therapist, I focus on helping people get what they want and understanding what’s in the way of getting what they want. My “success formula” guides couples through the process of awareness to acknowledgment (owning your stuff), making better choices, and then actions, which lead to change. On a broad level, this can be applied to any situation. On a intimate level, this process teaches communication skills that strengthen any couple and create a collaborative relationship outside the therapy sessions.

It’s truly all about communication. When couples first come to see me, they feel stuck. They’re talking at each other, not feeling heard by their partner, and don’t know what else to do. It’s discouraging and disheartening for both people. Walking the line between love and heartbreak is exhausting. My focus is to help you with the what and how of communication; what to say and how to say it so that both people feel valued, respected, and heard. Tone of voice and word choice can move a conversation forward or completely derail it. What your partner hears may not be what you’re meaning to convey and vice versa. Our work together brings both parties back into the conversation in a meaningful and loving way. Overtime, these new communication methods become second nature and a natural part of how you talk with your partner on a daily basis.

Generally, I suggest couples begin by meeting with me once a week, assuming this works for your schedules, although more frequent meetings are also an option for those couples who wish it. Over time, the sessions may become more spread out as you learn through our work together. As you repair your relationship, you may want to spend more time away from therapy working on the skills and techniques on your own. This is highly encouraged, however, I don’t believe in forcing people to work without a net either. Thus, I offer “booster sessions” where we’ll review the things we’ve talked about and reinforce what’s working. It’s also a chance to work out any kinks as well as address any new concerns that may have cropped up.

I truly enjoy helping couples reconnect and grow stronger in their relationship as a result of the work we do together. There’s nothing quite like watching couples revitalize their relationship and find deeper love through the work we do in our therapy sessions. I look forward to helping you and your partner recapture the love and connection you’ve been missing, during our work in couples’ therapy.
